About Us

This is the human side to the birth of the Leukaemia Support Queensland which was formed on 31st October 2006.

Our Inaugural president, Jane McMillan took a journey with a friend who was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (type M3). This journey will help to remind us of why we have undertaken such a worthy task and keep us focused on what it is we need to do.

In August of 2004 a friend of Jane’s was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (Type M3). she had no choice but to just drop everything and start treatment immediately in the RBH. Being on her own with two young children who were 6 and 3 when at the time, put her in a tough position but Jane stepped up and took care of her children and her life so that she could concentrate on treatment.

Jane’s friend achieved remission after the first month of chemotherapy and remains in remission today, but throughout those first five months of initial chemotherapy treatment Jane and her friend struggled to keep the household together as they suffered severe emotional, physical and financial hardship. . They were doing it alone and they were doing it tough, and did not know there was help out there for them.

In January 2005, Jane learned about the Leukaemia Foundation of Qld and decided to approach them to see if they could do something to assist and they offered some financial assistance to help them get back on their feet. They also provided some much needed counselling.

Fast forward about six months and Jane decided she wanted to give back to the foundation for the support they had received throughout this time, by helping to raise awareness of the LFQ in our own local community and help prevent patients in our community from going through the leukaemia journey in the same solitary way that Jane and her friend had.

Looking at the ways in which people can support the Leukaemia Foundation, one idea was to open a branch, and as they say, the rest is history.

In 2016 the branch changed it’s name to Leukaemia Support Queensland Inc, which is run solely by volunteers with 100% of funds raised going back into our local community by assisting patients and their families on their very long journey, with leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma and related blood cancers

Thank you for joining the journey.
